I was raised in Northern New Jersey, Bergen County and spent summers in south Harpswell, Maine. I attended Ridgewood High School and upon graduation in 1964 I joined the Marine Corps. Parris Island, S.C., Camp Lejuene, N.C., Camp Pendelton, Ca. and the Republic of Vietnam. While with the 3rdBattalion 4thMarine Regiment I received my Purple Heart in July 1966.
I returned to conus and served a tour of duty at Recruit Receiving Barracks, Parris Island, before re-enlisting and transferring to the 2ndMarine Air Wing at Beaufort, S.C. as an Air Traffic Controller. A second tour in Vietnam stationed at the MCAF Marble Mountain, then a final tour at MCAS Quantico, Va. I reluctantly left the Marine Corps after 10 years to pursue a career with the Federal Aviation Administration. Thirty years later I retired and moved to North Carolina.
I was a Charter member of the, now closed, Cohansey Chapter of the MOPH in Bridgeton, N.J., the Chamberlin Chapter in Bangor, Maine, a member at large for the Department of Wisconsin. Upon moving to North Carolina I was accepted to the Downeast Chapter #639 in Morehead City. Subsquently moving to Wilmington the then Department Commander Jim Casti asked me to reassemble the closed chapter 636 in Wilmington. Starting with eight local known members I help rebuild that chapter to its current membership of 73 Patriots.
As the emcee for the annual Wreaths Across America Ceremony, (WAA), I am an active solicitor for the Chapter and the WAA organization. In addition I have been the President of the New Hanover County Veterans Council, I am a Charter member of the Wilmington Purple Heart Dinner Assc. and a member of the Board of Directors of the North Carolina Purple Heart Foundation, which oversees the Purple Heart Honor Dinners throughout North Carolina each August.
I feel my vast background has well prepared me for the position of Commander of the Department of North Carolina and I look forward to working with our excellent Chapter Commanders.
